Some comments in my previous post made me realize something: humans are very peculiar about which way their toilet paper unrolls!
Call this an informal survey in my pursuit of less-than-trivial knowledge.
(from toothpaste for dinner)
Are you a behind-the-roll or over-the-roll person? And more importantly (for me)—why?
Update, 10/11/2008: It appears that most people are “over-the-roll”-ers. But for no particular reason. It must be something buried deep in the human psyche….]
Until next time...
I am an over guy, and it is actually more environmentally friendly.

Behind the roll because it seems easier to tear off sheets one-handed that way.
OVER the roll, so you can find the end of the fucking thing when you need to.
Same thing goes for paper towels.
Definitely over the front, so it’s easy to find. Leave a little unrolled for the next time. As for putting it on the tank, that’s just lazy, not to mention risky. If you holder has one of those spring thingies that’s so difficult to work, replace it with a post; easy on easy off. This will be on the final exam.
I like to leave it right beside the toilet so that when you puke, little chunks stick to it.
Over the roll, because it avoids allowing the paper to touch whatever is behind it (wall, alcove, et cetera). Results in less lint being lost to the environment instead to my precious lint-mongering asscrack.
I’m an over the roll guy…..um, because I said so. I have NO idea why but I’m just very anal retentive about it. Maybe it’s because it looks better that way.
Oh….and I haven’t commented on the “praying to the porcelin gods” photo’s. I felt for ya babe.
Over the roll. Ass-tetically it’s more pleasing. Plus the leading edge is closer to you and more easily accessible.
Definitely over the roll, my reasoning is exactly like Ron’s (don’t like it touching the wall). Maybe I’ve got control issues too.
Currently, the roll is sitting on the sink counter, but when it’s actually on the holder then it’s under the roll. Just as Alexander said above, it’s easier to tear off one handed.
I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t have any toilet roll holders attached to the walls in my bathroom at this moment.
Over the roll and that’s that way it should be God Dammit! Sorry – I was channeling my mother for a second there.
There was a time when I never noticed or much cared about the toilet paper roll. Then eventually I noticed my partner would flip the roll if I did not put it over the top. Naturally I had to do it the wrong way for a time just to see if he would ever say anything about it. He never did.
Over the roll. It’s easier to tear off those little sheets in the dark.
over the roll. because when i was a kid i read in ann landers that that was the proper way. damn i’m old. and why do i remember this shit!?
I’m an over the roll kinda of guy. I think it’s more astetically pleasing….LOL.
Over the roll, I once read that over the roll meant you were more of an optimistic person… it’s to the point that if I go to my parents or sister’s place, I change it if it’s under the roll…
put it on the roller yourself, here. (oops, actually there IS no roller in my bathroom!)
I’m over the roll for 2 reasons, 1 it looks neater, and 2 its easier to pull/tear. I change everyone’s loo roll if its under, every time, no matter whos loo I am using.
It’s amazing how big an issue this is. I remember Ann Landers, too, on this topic. She received a huge response to this topic.
