Down with the Wetness

We’ve had a lot of wet weather the last week or two. And even though we need it, it’s all coming down at once. Like several inches in an hour or so.

Last night/this morning, we had another one.

Always a fun thing to see...
Always a fun thing to see…
This system essentially sat over us for several hours.
This system essentially sat over us for several hours.

I went to bed around 1 AM or so, and nothing had happened yet. And then the lightning and thunder started. About an hour later, the Husbear woke up with the feeling that something bad was going to happen. So he went downstairs to look outside. Our home was surrounded by water, and it was starting to come in the back door.

Craptastic.

So much water was coming down so fast from the ridge behind us that it had jumped the embankment behind the house and water was pooling on the back patio. We wanted a swimming pool, but not there. As the water kept getting deeper, it started to seep in under the back door.

Fun.

So the Husbear and I grabbed shovels and rakes and went outside in the deluge and lightning to dig the embankment deeper in an effort to stop the water from coming over the top. It was like fighting Class III rapids. And maybe a Class IV at times.

After about an hour of doing what we could, we decreased the level of flooding in that area, and channeled it away from the back of the house as best we could.

There is another “ravine” on the right side of the property. Which was now a river. Flowing right down our driveway again. And around the well house. I did what I could to stem the flow of that water, but it was pretty futile at that point.

We climbed back into bed exhausted at around 5 or so. But neither of us could really sleep, worried that something else was going to happen.

This morning, after the rain stopped–for the moment–I went out to survey the damage.

The embankment behind the house. Or to the side of it, I suppose. Not that much is left of it.

The water made a new course from the embankment and ate out the fence line.

More of the fence being washed out.

The path the water decided to take, eating out the area next to the ponds, and all the way down to the road.

That's deep.

To the left of the ponds.

That’s going to take a bit to fix. Lovely.

And then there’s the driveway and the well house.

This could be a problem.

A deep mess.

More fun to fix!

This is the riverbed next to the house. Which is normally empty.

The empty creek. That's not empty.

And this is what I saw on the way to work. Normally, there’s a small creek here, if it’s running at all.

Little Sugar Creek, as viewed from the bridge on Hwy 72. This is normally a field.

Fun times!

And we’re expecting more rain all week….

Until next time...

  1. We get your weather about a day later :-/ hubby was at his office in Nashville this week and got flooded out if the downstairs apartment where he stays when he’s there. 6 inches in 2 hours.

  2. We had this weather all through July but we escaped destructive flash floods for the most part. Sorry you guys had to undergo this–hugs to you both as you begin to rebuild your property.

    1. Thank you. This has been the strangest “summer” that I can recall. It’s been like Spring and Autumn the entire time. I think we had one week of normal temperatures.

  3. Wow. I guess in a way you were lucky but it still sucks! Had a similar experience a few years ago involving a snow melt and flooding out the new tenant’s apt. 15 hrs after he moved in!

    Good luck filling in.
