Hi-Fi Friday: November 11, 2016

My turn to pick the theme this month with Blobby, and I finally went with songs about a particular city. It could be any city, but the song should be in some way about that city.

Which sounds really lame now that I have time to sit and think about it. But in for a penny, in for a pound.

And another Friday, another late post.

I’m not sure if 1stWave on SiriusXM has ruined this song for me or not. I will tell you, I never realized this song was actually about chess, and the musical, until I watched the video while posting this. That changed the story a bit for me.

I give you “One Night in Bangkok” by Murray Head.

YHWH help us all.

Until next time...

Which sounds really lame now that I have time to sit and think about it. But in for a penny, in for a pound.

And I almost didn’t make this post on the day, as I’ve been working all day, and didn’t realize it was the new month until Blobby let me know yesterday evening. Such is the craziness.

So, for my first selection, I’m going with a cover, but one of my favorites.

I give you Lavay Smith’s version of the 1947 classic “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans”, from her 2000 album “Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Miss Thing!”:

Blobby went with title songs for this month’s selection. Or the track selection with the same title as the album. He also opened it up to a lyrical phrase that is the title of the album, while it might not be the title of the song.

Confession: I went to this concert. And owned the CD. And still do, albeit ripped into digital form now. And I’m not afraid to admit it. Someone made a great album, regardless of the fake frontmen. And a few of the songs still shuffle into my playlists from time to time.

Milli Vanilli.

I give you their first U.S. release, which hit number two: 1988’s “Girl You Know It’s True” from the album of the same name that was certified 6x Platinum.

Plus, it’s a great earworm. *evil grin*

Two months of a numbers theme is over. It was back to Blobby for theme selection, and he went with title songs. Or the track selection with the same title as the album. He also opened it up to a lyrical phrase that is the title of the album, while it might not be the title of the song.

The twin sons of late teen-idol, Ricky Nelson, the Nelson twins came bursting (out of their leather pants) onto the scene in 1990. The beginning of the 90s marked the end of the hair bands, thanks to the onset of grunge–a genre I really didn’t get that much into. I definitely prefer the hair bands.

This video was named worst video of the decade… the DECADE… by SPIN magazine. It’s that good!

I give you Nelson’s 1990 song “After the Rain”, from the album of the same name. The song itself starts at the 2 minute mark, but watch the intro… just for the last of the 80s cheese.

Until next time...

Blobby picked out the theme for last month. It was “numbers”: the song must have a number in the title. Not the word ‘number’, but an actual numeric digit of some kind. I asked to continue the theme this month, one, because I liked it, and two, because I’m going to be really busy this month.

I’ve been a fan of Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 since they released Yourself or Someone Like You in 1996. And hey, it doesn’t hurt they’re from Orlando either.

I was kind of hoping INXS would pick up Rob Thomas as lead singer, especially after he did several concerts with them, as well as recorded a few songs with them. But alas…

But Rob has done pretty well solo as well.

I give you Matchbox 20’s 1996 “3 A.M.”:

For this week, I give you The Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979” from the 1995 album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”. But!… I’m giving you the version as seen in the 2006 movie Clerks 2, as it’s what my brain always conjures now when I hear the song. (And if you haven’t watched Clerks or Clerks 2, I highly recommend them.)

The original version of the song is here:
