Day Three: Going Up and Down

Tuesday morning saw us leaving Thornton bright and early and beginning the journey to the SW corner of Colorado and into the upper NE corner of Arizona.

A lot of driving. Well, all of it was driving. As if we walked or levitated. Driving over the mountains. And little ski towns. And valleys. Into desert areas. Definite climate change.

We crossed over the continental divide several times. Here you can see the Husbear being a little more Atlantic-y at the time.

You don’t want to know what he did on the divide after that picture was taken.

We saw several road signs along the way that looked similar to this. Apparently all the Subaru Outback-driving hippies in the area don’t care.

Coming out of the mountains. Which oddly enough was near some town that had a “Welcome to the real South Park” sign hanging up. I didn’t see a rhinoplasty business.

At a rest stop, the Husbear decided to growl at me, which I caught on camera.

No, not really. I was attempting to take a picture of myself when he walked into the shot and was yawn-talking and I turned my head to decipher. The picture makes me giggle.

There were still a few more mountain passes we went through. One of them had the road hugging this river, which we had to stop and look at in several locations when I could find enough shoulder space to pull over on.

And then there were a few overlooks that stunningly looked out onto valleys with little towns nestled in them.

Eventually, night fell.

We had a difficult time finding a hotel that night. After driving a few hours more than we expected, and into Arizona, we happened across a scary little place in the middle of some Indian reservation. But we were just happy to find it, at a reasonable rate, and without any apparent axe murderers around.

What was even scarier was that there was no cell service in the area at all. Vast stretches of nothing.

I actually took a video of the scariness, but couldn’t get it to upload properly via my iPhone. It’ll have to wait until I get home.

In lieu of that, I’ll leave you with a picture the Husbear was kind enough to take of me before bed.

Until next time...

  1. So you decided to skip Arches? Maybe next time?

We’ve never taken that route on your map. Looks like something we need to explore! Thanks for the great pictures!

    1. Yes, we skipped the Arches. The Husbear decided he wanted to go slaloming through the mountains instead. So we’ll save that for another trip.

I plan on posting a little more detailed information of the routes we took soon.

  2. beautiful country side. I love that drive. But I like to take it slower, stop and see more. But I vacation with out a time schedule. That helps. Great pics.

    1. We’ll go back and do it again without an agenda sometime soon. The sightseeing was more just an added bonus for this trip. There’s definitely a few places we’ll go back and spend more time visiting on our next trip.

  3. Love the street sign covered in stickers.

The photo of you with the husbear yawning looks like a snapshot from a potentially explicit encounter that can happen between men at such places like rest stops. Hehe..

After taking that great photo of you in bed I can imagine the forbidden things the husbear did to you (or least wanted to).

    1. Unless, of course, one is actually attempting to read what is under the stickers. 😉

I’ve never had one of those encounters. Yet. I hear they can be the stuff of legend though.

He actually fell asleep right after that. He was a tired bear….
