I picked the theme for this month: 80’s songs that make you cringe. And Blobby is correct: I did select the theme and emailed it to him while inebriated gambrinous on the streets of New Orleans. It’s what popped into my head first, so I ran with it. Unlike other things I’d like to have been popping in my head while in NOLA.
I LOATHE this song. This will be on repeat in my own personal Hell. And it’s the synth-horns section that kills it for me. It could have been a good song, perhaps. But that one bit of the song over and over is worse than nails on a chalkboard for me. Something about it is just out of sync with the rest of the song to my ear. I PHYSICALLY cringe any time it comes on SiriusXM’s 1st Wave, especially if I can’t change the channel. Like when I’m at the studio mid-tattoo.
I give you Human League’s “(Keep Feeling) Fascination”… *shudder*

HA. Funny this is yours. I don’t feel that way at all. It is not going down into the annals for history as a classic, but not cringe-worthy. Had you said “Human” I might agree.
In retrospect, it seems there were a lot of songs that make me cringe… and most had a weird synth thing going on with them.
I think they were clearly making fun of this in “Sing Street.”
The synth horns of this track have bothered me since 1983. I like the song very much but you have to give a little when it comes to The Human League and musical talent. They openly admit that they’re not really musicians and sometimes it shows. Saw them live almost 20 years ago. It was fun but whew was it rough.
It seems like a lot of my choices this month have an “off key” synth going on in them.
It was so the time though…well at least for a 19 year old hitting the gay discos. And I was hitting them hard every night of the week.
