One of my favorite short stories is “A Painful Case”. In it, the subject discovers by accident by reading a newspaper his estranged lover (whom he hasn’t seen in some years) had died. The narration of his reaction – and its conclusion “He felt that he was alone” captures this feeling spot-on.
