Showing My Ass

Not in the metaphorical sense. This time.

Friday, January 4, I posted this status update on Facebook that some of you might have seen:

I have an enormous zit or ingrown hair on my right butt check that needs to be popped. I just thought y’all should know.

Because that’s what it felt like.

Here’s what it looked like early Saturday morning, January 5:

01/05/2013 12:40 AM
01/05/2013 12:40 AM

At that point, I started to think it was an ingrown hair that I had maybe scratched and irritated somehow. I mean with the light fuzz and all, and being in a rub zone, that’s always a possibility. Right?

In the days after that, I decided there’s no way it was a zit. It felt like there was a nodule below it. Almost like it was a cyst. And nothing would really come out when it was squeezed. Because I kept trying to squeeze it.

I had the Husbear attempt to pop it a couple of times. Ouch. That didn’t really make it any better. And not much of anything really came out when he tried, other than some white sludge.

Then it started leaking. Kind of. More like draining. So I put a band-aid on it. When I pulled the band-aid off at night, it was disgusting.

I knew I needed to go to the doctor. Not The Doctor. But my general doctor.

Here’s what it looked like four days later on January 9 after visiting the doctor:

01/09/2013 8:10 PM
01/09/2013 8:10 PM

Here’s a slightly better close up:

The doctor thought it was possibly a spider bite. Which is highly probably considering where we live out in the country. He also thought maybe the bite wound also contained staph. Joy. So he put my on the most powerful antibiotics I have ever been on in my life. And also I had to irrigate the location and apply some antibiotic ointment to the site multiple times a day.

He also said the entire picking and attempting to pop it that I tried didn’t help matters any.

10 days after visiting the doctor. The Band-Aids are tearing up my skin:

01/20/2013 1:01 PM
01/20/2013 1:01 PM

19 days after visiting the doctor. It’s getting better:

01/29/2013 1:13 PM
01/29/2013 1:13 PM

And here we are, 42 days since I first noticed the problem, and 37 days after visiting the doctor:

02/14/2013 @ 11:28 AM

I’m really hoping that discoloration goes away from where the bite site was.

I’m not sure what the moral of the story is, other than: if it feels like a big zit, it probably isn’t, and I should probably get it checked.

Until next time...

Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

I was working outside for a few hours today, building another station for the Husbear’s salon (7 down, 3 to go!). I was even working under a canopy in an effort to stay out of the direct sunlight.

And you know what I remembered? The antibiotic I just finished this morning has a big warning label about no sun exposure.

I guess now I know why….

“But trust me on the sunscreen.”

Sweet Banana… Come?

I’ve been feeling a wee bit under the weather the last three days. I woke up Wednesday morning feeling like someone had attacked my throat with a porcupine. I thought maybe it would pass, but Thursday morning saw it spread to my ears and nose. Damn it.

Now I’m medicated thanks to the doctor. Not The Doctor, but the doctor.

But music helps keep me sane. Well, what I consider to be sane. Music, and copious amounts of alcohol. Which I can’t drink according to the label on the side of the medicine bottle. So I guess it’s more music then!

I really wish I could find a decent video from this band. For ANY song of theirs. They’re apparently aloof like that.

So, I present you with a song about fruit. Or is it?

Here’s the White Ghost Shivers performing “Sweet Banana” on the streets of NOLA. Not the best audio quality when it comes to capturing her voice. But it’s one of the few videos I could find with them in it.

I heart bands that perform on the streets on NOLA. And other cities as well. Except for those Peruvian flute bands.

Luckily the song is available to listen to from their website! But I’m nice and embedded it below:

Cheeky, isn’t it?

Until next time...

Hooked on a Non-Insured Feeling

The Husbear has mostly recovered from his bout with the flu. I am finally starting to feel a lot more mobile. Hard to imagine one could get tired of lying on the couch, but I’m pretty darn past that point.

I wonder if this guy makes house calls? I bet he could make me feel better.

Tattoo
lick to embiggen

I have no idea what to even do at a gym to think about looking like that!

But back to what I was writing about….

This is the first time I’ve been seriously sick since I left the employ of Wal-Mart. And the first time I’ve had to pay for medications that weren’t covered by health insurance in some part. Holy crap! Non-insured medical and pharmaceutical costs are horrific. $65 for one office visit (discounted because I paid cash), $120 for the Husbear’s medications, and $165 for my medications. I’d hate to think how empty our wallet would if something serious happened! Or how maybe we’d be refused medical care because of that.

I know some of this is the Husbear and my own “doing”: we are both self-employed. That’s one of the trade-offs that is hard to offset by being your own boss. But health insurance should not be one of the things that you have to trade away. The Husbear hasn’t had health insurance since we’ve been together, which for the most part hasn’t been a problem because he rarely gets sick or injured. I lost my health insurance when I chose to become self-employed.

It’s not that we haven’t looked for health insurance that covers visits and medications. It exists. But not at what I would consider any “reasonable” price. It seems you have two choices: either pay “low” premiums for what I would call “disaster coverage” that covers only catastrophic situations, or pay extremely high premiums to cover regular visits and medications. And don’t even get me started on dental or vision. No wonder so many people in this country don’t have health insurance! At least the self-employed people. Or people who work for small businesses that cannot afford a group health plan to offer their 10 employees.

I know all insurances are really just a gamble, but the older we get the better our odds are that we will need it. Any suggestions from any readers out there? Is anyone who my blog self-employed and have decent health coverage?

Until next time...
Erik
