30 Day Challenge, Day 04 — Your favorite book

My fourth entry in this “30 Day Challenge” is my favorite book.

It has the words “Don’t Panic” in large, friendly letters on the cover.

I speak of the “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy“, by the late Douglas Adams.

I actually love all five of the Hitchhiker series written by Adams, which also includes “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe”, “Life, the Universe and Everything”, “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish” and “Mostly Harmless”.

But h2g2 is by far my favorite. It’s the one book I’ve read countless times, and each time I pick it up it’s as if it’s the first time I’ve ever read it. It’s snarky. It’s irreverent. It’s sci-fi.

It probably also explains a lot about the way my brain thinks.

A close second favorite would be “The Cartoon History of the Universe – From the Big Bang to Alexander the Great (Volumes 1-7)” by Larry Gonick. Yes. It really is a history book. But it’s done in cartoons. Which is the way I think. And remember things. I HIGHLY recommend you pick up a copy. Even if you hate history.

Also good are some of the other books he’s written that I’ve read:

  • “The Cartoon History of the Universe II – From the Springtime of China to the Fall of Rome (Volumes 8-13)”
  • “The Cartoon History of the Universe III – From the Rise of Arabia to the Renaissance (Volumes 14-19)”
  • “The Cartoon History of the United States”
  • “The Cartoon History of the Modern World, Volume 1: From Columbus to the U.S. Constitution”
  • “The Cartoon Guide to (non)Communication”

This too probably explains a lot about the way my brain thinks.

You should probably run away now.

Until next time...
Erik

30 Day Challenge, Day 03 — Your favorite television program

My third entry in this “30 Day Challenge” is my favorite television program.

I really don’t watch much TV anymore, mostly because I hate commercials. And by the time I get home from the studio it’s usually all infomercials.

But I do like a lot of the stuff on the diy Network and HGTV. Probably because it gives me cool ideas for around the house, the hair salon (for the Husbear), and the tattoo studio. And some ways *not* to do stuff. Always important to learn by example. Even it it’s a bad one. (Kind of like the way I live my life….)

So that leaves me all old school and rerun-y. I love “Star Trek: Voyager”. Still do. I have it playing now on the computer as I type this actually. Captain Janeway was awesome. Especially when she was having her onscreen stroke while B’Elanna watched:

Sometimes you press "Pause" at just the right time. I think the Captain is having a stroke?

I loved the Star Trek universe. Except that they got rid of those man-dresses from The Next Generation.

Until next time...

30 Day Challenge, Day 02 — Your favorite movie

My second entry in this “30 Day Challenge” is my favorite movie.

Is porn an allowable movie genre?

In the non-porn genre, I don’t know that I have a favorite. To me favorite would imply that I could quote a movie from beginning to end. I can’t do that. Hell, I can barely remember my address.

I do have several movies I like to watch over and over though: Dogma, The Fifth Element, The Gods Must Be Crazy, V for Vendetta, Back to the Future, and South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut.

I guess if I had a favorite of those, it would be Dogma.

Mostly because it pokes the Catholic Church (and in a larger aspect, all organized religions) in the eye with their own beliefs.

And hey, it’s got Alanis Morissette as God. What’s not to like about that?

Until next time...

30 Day Challenge, Day 01 — Your favorite song

My first entry in this “30 Day Challenge” is my favorite song.

The problem is: I don’t know that I have just one favorite. You could go look at all the songs I’ve talked about in the past here on my blog. There’s quite a few I talk about.

If I had to pick my favorite at the moment, it would probably be Michael Andrews and Gary Jules’ version of “Mad World”:

It’s very haunting. And creepy. But I love it. I think the Husbear described it as “depressing”. Which I find it to be just the opposite. Although I’d be at a loss to explain why.

Gary Jules has a magnificent voice, and has some great songs on the albums he has done. But this one cover still sticks in my head the most. (But you should really go check out some of his other work. Trust me on this.)

Then there’s “My Immortal” by Evanescence:

Amy Lee‘s voice is so haunting to me. Her voice just finds it’s way into that part of my brain that says “spooky”. But it probably also helps that the band is “local” from Little Rock, Arkansas. I love the song “Lacrymosa” from their last album “The Open Door”, but it never made radio play. This is why I should be allowed to pick out songs that make it to the radio, dammit!

The “O Fortuna” portion in “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff also makes me feel all glow-y inside in a moody sort of way, as does “Mars, the Bringer of War” from The Planets by Gustav Holst. Add to that “Uninvited” by Alanis Morissette” and Enter The Circus” by Christina Aguiler. Okay, I know that last one isn’t really a “song” but it creeps the fuck out of me in a weird way, just like clowns do!

What’s with all this music I like that is rather haunting?

And what about “The Wrong Child” by R.E.M.? I love that. It’s kind of haunting in a weird sort of way.

But wait, there’s more!

I love “Deviant Ingredient” by The B-52s.

Damn. Well doesn’t that just throw a monkey wrench in what I like?

Then again, I pretty much love EVERY song by The B-52’s. Except that album they did with David Byrne. What the fuck was up with that?

And then there’s Green Day with “Hitchin’ A Ride” and “Last Ride In“. Damn. Total genre switch. And what about Hootie & the Blowfish with “Time” and “Bluesy Revolution“?

So much for ONE favorite. How does one decide these things when they have so many gigs of music to listen to?

I’m an extremely moody music person: depending on my mood, I listen to certain music. It ranges so much it’s hard to pick just one favorite.

And am I going to Hell if I like this?

Thanks to cb, I heart this version. Enough to annoy the Husbear more than you can imagine!

Oh, and if you don’t have a copy of any of these and would like one, let me know. 😉

Until next time...
Erik
