Wig

This is one of the first B-52’s songs I ever heard, if not the very first one sometime back in 1988 or thereabouts. “Wig” was on their 1986 album “Bouncing off the Satellites”, which was my introduction to the greatest party band ever. I couldn’t tell you where or how I heard this song, as no one I knew at the time listened to such music. All I know is that it made me go buy every album they had made up to that point. And I’ve been a voracious fan ever since.

I used to pop the “Bouncing off the Satellites” tape into my Walkman and run (when I was training for cross country and track in High School). I think I actually stretched the tape out listening to it so much.

I present you with The B-52’s “Wig”:

Seriously. How can you not hear a song like that and just be all happy inside?

Tickets to their NW Arkansas concert went on sale today, but the website was up last night and I placed my ticket order. Just waiting on the confirmation email. *squeeeee*

In the Year 2525

I have absolutely no idea when I first heard this song. I’m assuming it was a long time ago, and probably was playing on some radio station my father had playing in the car.

But it has struck a chord, and has always stuck with me. It’s got that “All of this has happened before; all of this will happen again.” feel to it. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it, and I believe that. And I don’t mean small events (although there’s a lot of that going on too), but the entire span of civilizations.

Now that I feel slightly little depressed thinking about that, I present you Zager & Evans’ “In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)”:

Some of you may find that song both a little slow and depressing.

For you who like a dance beat, here’s Venice Beat’s cover with a female voice. I like the overall feel of the song, but I think it ruined the message. And the video is rather horrible.

And here’s Pete Stark’s dance cover, this time with a male voice. The song and the video get interesting at around 30 seconds in.

Like Gasoline You Want to Pump Me

Ahh… The summer of 1990. I just finished my junior year in high school. Damn. That was so long ago, and yet it wasn’t.

Sure the song is cheesy. But it was the end of the decade of excess, and the start of the end of the hair band era.

I love the bass line in this song: simple, well-measured, AND it leads. Totally effective.

I actually saw Poison in concert when they were touring for this album. And I’d probably go see them again if they ever happened to be around in Arkansas. Bret Michaels performed here twice a few years ago, and I caught one of the gigs. He can still perform. And it felt good to be all late 80s schmoozy.

Crash Into Me

Today has been a really weird Saturday at the studio. My first two appointments showed up drunk (at noon!), which I refused to tattoo (for several reasons). Then my next two appointments no-showed (I’m keeping their deposit money!). Walk-ins have been slow, as it’s the first 80 degree weekend we’ve had in a long time so I’m betting everyone is out enjoying the day. If my last appointment of the day doesn’t show, or is all weird, I’ll probably scream.

I don’t know that I’m a big Dave Matthews Band fan, but I do like a lot of the “sound” the band makes. And Dave Matthews really is pleasant on the eyes, especially when he’s all scruffy.

But I like this song. And because I want to float on a double bass in the middle of a pond and play a song on it while wearing tails. Or a zoot suit. Seriously. I’m weird like that.

I present Dave Matthews Band’s “Crash Into Me”:
