Hi-Fi Friday (Belatedly!): July 8, 2015

Previously…

I have this method of ranking music in my library, which currently consists of 34,968 songs: By default, all new songs in my library get ⭐️⭐️⭐️. As I listen to them, I sort them as follows: ⭐️ means it’s “rubbish” (as Dr. Spo would say) and I’ll probably delete it from the library, ⭐️⭐️ means it’s just “meh” but I’ll probably keep it, ⭐️⭐️⭐️ means it’s okay and we will probably talk over it, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ means I really like and may potentially sing at random, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ means everyone better shut the fuck up because my song is on! You know the kind of songs I’m talking about. We all have them.

These are mine, one post at a time.

I’m starting my approach to this with songs I’ve given ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to in iTunes. There’s only 90 of them at the moment. I’ll probably sneak in an occasional ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ as well.

Blobby asked/let me pick out a theme for his “My Music Monday” this month. So I picked songs about drinking. To add a little twist, I said no country songs. As he’s doing this, I’ll go with the same theme. And I’m going to self-rule out Jimmy Buffett songs. I don’t feel that Jimmy Buffett is country music, but since a majority of his songs are about drinking… it’s just too easy. 😉

I’m posting this late, as the Husbear and I were road tripping last week, and the limited Internet access we had was, well, limited.

1986. Let’s see… I was 13. I had ZERO idea what being gambrinous meant then. But this song hit the airwaves and I loved it. It was a few more years before I found out what Brass Monkey was. And then the song made sense. Not that I ever have wanted to try malt liquor and O.J. *shudder*

I actually have this song listed as ⭐️⭐️⭐️ in my library, but I still hear this song on occasion and it makes me smile. Maybe because it reminds me of a more innocent moment in my life. Or maybe because it just has a good beat.

I present Beastie Boys’ “Brass Monkey”:

Until next time...

And since Blobby is doing cover’s this month…

I’ve missed the last two Friday posts. Life.

I notice I have quite a collection of country music. I’m not sure how that happened. But I’ll blame the Husbear. I really didn’t start listening to country until we met. Or disco. Or dance. Weird.

Trick Pony would be one of those country bands I like. Well, their debut album in 2001 called “Trick Pony” I like. They have two other albums I haven’t heard. I’m not sure why I like them, other than they’re fun. At least fun to my ear.

This is Trick Pony’s cover of Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” featuring both Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

Until next time...

I think I have way to many cover songs in my library. Well, I don’t think so. But the Husbear might beg to differ.

I’m a fan of a little gender swapping when it comes to many songs. Usually I prefer female covers of songs originally sung by men for some reason. But every now and again a male singer will come along and do justice to a song originally sung by a female.

That said, I present Quietdrive’s 2006 cover of Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 song “Time After Time”:

So… I have this thing for Doctor Who, as you might have seen. It’s been there since I was a kid going all the way back to the 70s.

The soundtracks for the series since it’s restart in 2005 have been phenomenal. Murray Gold composed a piece called “I am the Doctor” (you can hear it here) for the Eleventh Doctor in an episode called “The Eleventh Hour”. It’s good.

But someone did it one better. Somehow. They made a dubstep version of it. While I’m not a fan of dubstep for the most part, I really like what it added to the composition.

Trust me, I’m the Doctor.

Until next time...

Jumping back down to a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ song. It’s actually one that I toggle between ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I’m not sure why I can’t pick a rating and stick with it, but sometimes that happens.

Swing revival. Got to love it. At least I do. So much love. I wish more bands were still out there doing this. Well, they probably are, but I’m just unaware of them. I have a large selection of this genre in my library. Enough that it annoys the Husbear. 😉

Now if I only had a zoot suit.

In an effort to attempt to blog a little more, I’m somewhat “borrowing” a schtick from Blobby at Blobby’s Blog. I guess this makes the second thing I’ve borrowed from him actually. Maybe one day I’ll come up with something of my own.

I have this method of ranking music in my library, which currently consists of 34,968 songs: By default, all new songs in my library get ⭐️⭐️⭐️. My first ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ song post!

And, a remix of sorts. Or a retooling. By a different band. A “genre” I have a lot of in my music collection.

I can’t say I’ve ever been a fan of Coldplay. But somewhere, at some point, on some media, this version of one of their songs played. And I instantly loved it. I’m thinking mostly because of the Cuban elements added to it. And it’s a sound I love to hear.

I know nothing of the remix band, Rhythms Del Mundo, and I may have to correct that after writing this.

I present Rhythms Del Mundo’s “Clocks ft. Coldplay”:

Here is the original version of the song by Coldplay if you’ve not heard it before. It’s not bad, but it’s not good:

And there you have it.
