That’s one of my goals this year, to learn ASL. May this get me off my butt to start work toward that goal. Thank you.
It is an interesting (if extremely staged) experiment. I only wish they did not label him “hearing impaired” instead of “Deaf”. Beyond the label, what it does is focus on the “impairment”, the difference from a perceived normality, rather than the common humanity. The many Deaf people I know do appreciate the new possibilities opened by technologies that are not only targeted to oral communication. Social attitudes towards difference, however, don’t seem to evolve quite as fast…
