Blobby threw a few ideas at me for October. Of them, I was intrigued by this one: “original versions of songs that were taken and made famous by other people.” But I needed a little more definition, as it’s a fine line in my brain between “covers” and “songs made famous by others”. (I’m easily confused like that!) So Blobby clarified it as “songs that were originals that weren’t well known (or known at all). It’s almost like covers Opposite Day.” And our theme was born: ‘covers Opposite Day’!

That could be a wee bit challenging. Or will it? That means I’ll need to flex my music history muscle. Which is smaller than most of my other muscles.

Most people have heard or know of R.E.M.’s “Superman” from 1986. It’s not horrible, but definitely not their best work either, in my opinion.

The song was originally written and performed in 1969 by The Clique.

There really isn’t much difference between the two, as you can tell. But it was R.E.M. who made it popular. Although I do suppose “popular” is subjective.

I suppose we’ll start with an obvious one. At least for me.

Most people know Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”. If memory servers, it’s the song that brought her to public attention, and rightfully so.

But did you know that it was originally recorded and preformed by Robert Hazard in 1979?

Roger’s original is definitely a little more punk, and a lot more rocking.

And now you know. Because…

knowledge is power

I have this method of ranking music in my library, which currently consists of 34,968 songs: By default, all new songs in my library get ⭐️⭐️⭐️. As I listen to them, I sort them as follows: ⭐️ means it’s “rubbish” (as Dr. Spo would say) and I’ll probably delete it from the library, ⭐️⭐️ means it’s just “meh” but I’ll probably keep it, ⭐️⭐️⭐️ means it’s okay and we will probably talk over it, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ means I really like and may potentially sing at random, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ means everyone better shut the fuck up because my song is on! You know the kind of songs I’m talking about. We all have them.

These are mine, one post at a time.

I’m starting my approach to this with songs I’ve given ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to in iTunes. There’s only 90 of them at the moment. I’ll probably sneak in an occasional ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ as well.

And for this month, we–meaning Blobby and me–are doing songs that make you want to stop what you’re doing and get up and shake your tail feathers! Blobby allowed me to pick this month, and that was the first thing that popped into my head.

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you had to know this song and band were coming. Blobby did.

What can I say. My party band. Well, not mine. But mine.

I was a fan of The B-52’s before 1989s Cosmic Thing hit the scenes and brought them into a wider audience. I’ve loved everything they’ve done both before and after. Yes, Blobby, even 1992s Good Stuff.

How can you listen to anything they’ve done and not want to move. Some songs more than others. And this is one of them. One pretty much everyone on the planet has probably heard. And I’m sure The B-52’s are okay with that.

From the 1989 album Cosmic Thing, I give you The B-52’s “Love Shack”:

Tin Roof!

I’m sure I’m going to Hell for this selection, but I really do love this song. I love most of the album it is on as well.

I’ve been a fan of Big & Rich (as a duo), and then Big Kenny’s solo stuff as well, for as long as I can remember. Okay, maybe that’s 11 years or so, but I’m lucky to remember where I parked the car today. If you can get a hold of any of Big Kenny’s stuff (or find it on YouTube, especially his “Live a Little” album), it’s totally worth the listen. Trust me on this.

I don’t know about in your neck of the woods, but this song got a LOT of radio play when it came out in 2004. And yet, I still like it, and want to shake my booty when it plays (just ask the Husbear). There are a few dance mixes of it out there that are pretty darn good, but the original is just as shake your booty worthy.

I give you Big & Rich’s “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)”:

At least that was the plan. Hopefully it’s still the plan. I’m behind. I haven’t been able to read any blogs since before leaving for New Orleans. I’m back-dating this post mostly for continuity purposes, as I had an issue with my WordPress database that wouldn’t allow me to post remotely while traveling, so it’s been sitting here, waiting on me to rebuild the home computer which crashed while we were gone, so I could post things.

I have a thing for swing. Music. Mostly because it has this magical ability to make your butt move without you even thinking about it. Or maybe that’s just mine.

Every time I hear this song I can’t help but to want to get up and move around the room a little bit. Granted, by the time the movement gets to my feet, I look like I’m Michael J. Fox. Too soon?

I give you a live version of one of my swing favorites, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s 1999 cover of Richard Sherman’s “I Wanna Be Like You”:

But on with the post!

This was released in 1987, and I still haven’t tired of it. Almost 30 years ago! I remember buying this cassette. Twice. Because I listened to the entire tape so many times that it stretched the tape out. And here, almost 30 years later, it has been with me in almost every form of media that has been released since then.

If there is one song in my life that keeps making me move, it’s one particular song from this album. I don’t know why (anymore), but it’s my “default” go-to song when I feel the need to move around. Definitely rock. Yet dance-y. And soooooo many remixes were done.

I give you INXS’ “New Sensation”:
