Hi-Fi Friday: June 24, 2016

It’s June. And Blobby‘s turn to pick out the theme. His choice this month is “colors”. American colors, apparently, and not British colours. I thought maybe because it was gay pride month, rainbows and all. But apparently that wasn’t it. Although I’m not sure what it was. But we’ll run with it.

I’d also be lying if I said I have been keeping up with the Internet as of late. Well, at least as far as blogs and social media goes. So I guess that pretty much is the Internet. I’ve been getting to the point where I want to crawl into a hole and just close it above me.

And this is one of those songs I’m not sure why I like it, but I just do. Maybe the steady blues beat? The sing-songy-ness? Or maybe because it’s just Aerosmith and part of me still enjoys listening to them?

I’ve never seen the video before, as I recall. And I’m actually impressed with the level of human diversity presented in it.

Today’s my birthday. I somehow made it to 43.

It’s also Pride weekend here in NW Arkansas. It’s a small community, and usually not a big turnout for anything. But Orlando changed that. Every event that is scheduled has sold out.

So with that, I’m going with probably the most obvious selection for this month’s theme.

I give you Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”, but as covered by the One Voice Children’s Choir:

And Cyndi singing her version, just because:

Three colors this week: red, gold, green.

And weird enough, I don’t recall ever seeing the video for this song until I looked it up. Maybe I killed that part of the 80s from my brain already.

Lot Lizards and Smokey Ladies

So much awesome. One song from from two members of my favorite bands.

Hifi Sean (from The Soup Dragons back in the day, and whom I’ve talked about before) featuring Fred Schneider (from The B-52’s, who I’ve talked about a lot). It’s very much in the vein of what Hifi Sean does these days with the dance music circuit. But I like it.

I give you “Truck”:

While several songs came to mind for this month, this one popped into my head first. So I must acknowledge it. While it’s not about one single color, or mention specific color names, it does involve colors. I’m not sure if it counts in the purist sense, but I’m going with it. Mostly because it’s a good start of the summer song for me. And since it’s finally above 70 here on a steady basis, that qualifies.

And who doesn’t love a Cindy song?

From 1986s “Bouncing off the Satellites”, I give you The B-52’s “She Brakes for Rainbows”:

Here comes Brenda
Brenda Holiday
Through she hasn’t that much to say

She knows where the rain goes
She brakes… She brakes for rainbows

Fly Brenda
Fly Brenda

Window in the weather
Flowers in her hair
Footprints on the ceiling
How did they get there

She knows where the rain goes
She brakes… She brakes for rainbows

Until next time...

It was my month to pick a theme, and after a few ideas, I ended up with “automobiles”. Granted, that could really be about anything car-related. And it might be because I have a new vehicle on my mind.

This one may or may not technically qualify: it talks about a car and car parts, but I’m pretty sure it’s more about the human condition, or at least the condition of one human. But I like it, and it’s CAKE! And I may have considered naming my vehicle “Satan”…

CAKE’s “Satan is My Motor”:

I’ve got wheels of polished steel
I’ve got tires that grab the road
I’ve got seats that selflessly hold my friends
And a trunk that can carry the heaviest of loads

I’ve got a mind that can steer me to your house
And a heart that can bring you red flowers
My intentions are good and earnest and true
But under my hood is internal combustion

And Satan is my motor
Hear my motor purr
The Satan is my motor, motor
I hear my motor purr
A Satan is the only one who seems to understand

I’ve got brakes
I’m wide awake
I can stop this car at any time
At the very last second, I can change directions
Turn completely around if I feel so inclined

I’ve got a mind that can steer me to your house
And a heart that can bring you red flowers
My intentions are good and earnest and true
But under my hood is internal combustion power

And Satan is my motor
I hear my motor purr
A Satan is my motor, motor
I hear my motor purr
A Satan is the only one who seems to understand
A Satan is my motor

Hear my motor purr
Satan is the only one who seems to understand

Until next time...
