Tales of us working on our house.

Gunk

Our dishwasher of 10 years has been a little cantankerous as of late.

It started leaking during one of the cycles a while ago, and I thought I had it fixed.

Apparently not. It started leaking again.

So, being the somewhat stubborn man I am, I started taking the dishwasher apart. With the little things. Like the interior vent screen.

And what I discovered was rather nasty.

Gunk!
Gunk!

That’s 10 years of who knows what. Buildup from our well water? Aerated food particles? Who knows.

I scraped out all the stuff.

Gross!
Gross!

Nasty.

The stuff had corroded one of the seals inside the door, which was allowing the water to leak into the door and out the machine.

I temporary replaced the seal with some seals I had laying around. Go figure. The hoarder in me.

I also ordered a replacement seal online for a more permanent solution.

I guess maybe I need to do a little more maintenance on the washer one of these days.

And figure out what we might have been drinking from the tap before we installed the house filters a few years ago.

At least the stuff didn’t smell.

Until next time...

Tippity Toe and Hot Water too

A wee bit more progress was made on the ol’ home remodel that’s been forever ongoing. Back when the laundry room portion of the remodel started, plans were made that had to be later changed after a “fun” discovery was made which meant an entire new project.

Part of the bathroom addition consisted of adding an alcove that the hot water heater would be located in, as well as a storage area for cleaning supplies like the vacuum and brooms.

Here’s what the laundry area looked like as of this morning. Kind of. This picture was taken a couple years ago. But it does show how the washer and dryer are stacked, and the water heater located next to them.

Laundry area, before.

We discovered a slight problem after we came up with this configuration. The Husbear couldn’t see or reach into the back of the dryer. At least not without a step stool. I can’t tell you how many times I’d see him up on his tiptoes trying to reach into the back of the dryer. It always gave me a good chuckle.

Anyway, we finally got around to moving the water heater off of the pedestal and into it’s own little nook, and unstacked the washer and dryer. I know, it doesn’t sound like much. And in the big picture of this whole thing, it isn’t. But it is something.

The ol’ washer and dryer, no longer stacked.

Next up I’ll be building a cabinet and hanging rack above the washer and dryer that will hide the piping. Eventually.

Hot and cold water lines attached to the now relocated hot water heater.
The water heater in it’s cozy alcove.
The whole shebang.

As you can see, we still have to finish texturing and painting the laundry room. Then install trim.

But hey, now the Husbear can see into the dryer! 😉

Until next time...

Pic a Day in May: Day 1

Jim of Jim’s Stuff has started the “Pic a Day in May” challenge. So I thought I’d go ahead and give it a shot. It’s not like I can really think of anything to blog about these days anyway. So we’ll go with my life in pictures. There’s that whole “a picture is worth a thousand words” thing anyway, so that just means I need to write less. 😉

Today is Tuesday. It’s the last of my days off this week. Which for me means cleaning up the mess I made outside from this weekend’s construction activities.

Here’s a panoramic view from the center of the parking area/driveway at the house. (Click to see the full size picture.)

As you can see, nature is quite colorful here in Pea Ridge, Arkansas at the moment. Things are blooming and growing and being all pretty.

My sawhorses are still there in the yard. We don’t have a garage, so I have to work outside when I have a project. Which is sometimes okay. Unless it’s raining. There’s some trash bags and scrap MDF lying around as well that all needs to be disposed of.

You can see some remnants of the Husbear’s projects as well: concrete & mortar bags for the terraced walls in the yard, and compost for the landscaping.

One of these days we might be done with all these goings on so we can actually “enjoy” it.

Taken with 360 Panorama on my iPhone 3GS.

Until next time...

It’s Getting Hot In Here

The air conditioning unit decided to not work yesterday afternoon. You know, on the hottest day on record so far for Pea Ridge, Arkansas. A high of 86 degrees.

Nor did it work the rest of the night.

This is the same HVAC unit we had installed less than eight years ago.

So the HVAC people were called, and they came out to the house today.

And… the heat pump decided to rub a hole in it’s line yesterday at some point. Releasing all it’s freon into the atmosphere. All. Empty.

And… the entire thing will have to either be repaired for around a grand-five. Because apparently the type of freon in our system is in high demand (i.e., less supply means higher price) due to a change in government regulations phasing out R-22 freon.

Or we will have to replace the unit, for who knows what price. Well, we’ll know what the price is when they come out to talk to us in a few more days with estimates.

*sigh*

I wonder how much I’ll have to pimp out the Husbear for, and how many times, in order to recoup that cost?

Until next time...
